College Sports Jobs – Athletic Internships

Many of the top athletic programs now actively recruit interns because the development of the intern program provides comprehensive exposure to annual fundraising principals. The intern will have systematic and substantial exposure to the planning and implementation of all aspects of athletic annual fundraising, including telemarketing, direct mail, stewardship, events and ticketing benefit administration. The intern has the opportunity to develop a working knowledge and understanding of the elements of annual fund-raising and will develop skills in teamwork, organization and analysis as it relates to athletics fundraising. The position usually reports to the director of annual fund and development operations.

The central responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing solicitation strategies
  • Managing data for mailings, telemarketing and thank-you calls
  • Organizing and implementing annual thank-you calling by student-athletes
  • Organizing and implementing small donor cultivation events
  • Tracking and analysis of solicitation results
  • Developing stewardship skills, especially in the case of major donors, through individual interactions, customer service, and communication
  • Developing a basic understanding of fund accounting principles and applying them to reporting on fundraising campaigns and solicitations
  • Involvement in other fundraising activities if time and interest allows, including working with the events and major gifts staff.

Requirements. strong analytical skills, attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communications skills, and strong computer skills.

Qualifications. Experience in fundraising; knowledge of university athletics.

Salary Range. Monthly salary for this intern position is roughly $1,000 to $2,000 per month. Pay is often hourly, with $10 per hour being close to average. Internships are also often unpaid and/or college credit eligible.
